The Black Caps all-rounder was admitted to hospital on Friday and has little time to recover ahead of Sunday’s Group A match.
The 30-year-old elder brother of wicketkeeper/batsman Brendon is a latecomer to the international scene and has just 19 one-dayers to his name.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni dismantled New Zealand’s bowlers as India eased to a 117-run win in their final warm-up before Saturday’s World Cup opener.
Skipper Dhoni blasted three sixes and 11 fours to make an unbeaten 108 from just 64 balls in India’s massive total of 360-5 in Chennai.
Gautam Gambhir – batting at number three in the order – weighed in with 89 while there were also half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina.
India had at one stage been 42-2 inside the opening powerplay as openers Virender Sehwag (23) and Sachin Tendulkar (17) fell early.

Gambhir and Kohli, who made 59 from 68 deliveries to push his claims for a place in the starting XI, steadied the ship with a third-wicket stand of 106.
It was eventually ended when Jacob Oram (2-70) had Kohli caught behind, though the medium-pacer was later to suffer at the hands of Dhoni.
After a circumspect start to his innings, the wicketkeeper-batsman at one stage blasted boundaries off seven successive deliveries he faced, five of them coming off Oram.
New Zealand – who had Ross Taylor in charge in the absence of Daniel Vettori – threatened to make a game of it at the start of their reply, openers Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum putting on 94 in a hurry.
McCullum had eased his way to 58 but his run-out sparked a collapse – the Kiwis slipped from 118-1 to 243 all out after just 43.1 overs.
