Sehwag’s revenge completed

Posted by: | Comments (0)

India’s opening batsman, Virender Sehwag completed revenge on Bangladesh after starring in India’s 87-run triumph mauling the Tigers in Mirpur. Bangladesh, who have knocked out India from the group stages in the last world cup were now in the receiving end. The pre-tournament favourites got their campaign off to flier with an impressive win over the Tigers in the opening game of the World Cup in Mirpur.

Sehwag stole the show on Saturday with a sterling 175 off 140 balls, putting on 203 for the third wicket with fellow centurion Virat Kohli as India won the battle of the co-hosts.

And Sehwag, who has been a vocal critic of Bangladesh’s cricketing pedigree in the longer form, enjoyed getting one over India’s local adversaries.

World cup curtain raises

Events unfolding in Port of Spain four years ago culminated in euphoria on one side of the Bengal border, and gloom on the other. With every dance down the wicket from Tamim Iqbal, little-fancied Bangladesh landed another blow in a series of blows that would eventually eliminate India, wearied by the weight of expectation and a discordant dressing room, from the first round of the World Cup. Four years later the teams meet again, but in a tournament protected from the domino effect of a shock like the one in Trinidad. The stakes this time are different as well, for it is not just India, overwhelming favourites again, who carry a tremendous weight of expectation.
As Shakib Al Hasan entered the opening ceremony in a decorated cycle rickshaw, soaking in the goodwill from tens of thousands inside the Bangabandhu Stadium and the crowds surrounding it, his demeanour revealed pride and a sense of the grandeur of the occasion, and none of the reluctance he’s had in captaining Bangladesh in series past. There would also have been a feeling of responsibility, of a magnitude no Bangladesh captain has ever faced before.
For the first time, Bangladesh are expected to go beyond the first round of a World Cup. For the first time, and largely because of a significant home advantage, their passage will not be considered an upset. For the first time, they are hosting a World Cup and can see all around them a stirring passion saturating the country. Bangladesh too will be relieved that the format allows a little room for error, while striving to avoid it against one of the tournament heavyweights.
Justifiably or not, India have begun several World Cups wearing the favourites tag, but never has that label been more authentic than now. Their bowling attack might blow hot and cold, but even on their most frigid days India possess a batting line-up capable of overhauling anything.

Those who were not at the Bangabandhu National Stadium will never know just how successful and moving the opening ceremony of the 2011 World Cup was. Those who saw it on TV would have cringed at Sonu Nigam crooning an English inspirational song, Bryan Adams of all people being the top draw, recordings of Shankar-Ehsan-Loy’s unremarkable theme song playing on loop, and the politicians inducing yawns with their speeches.

Those who were here, though, saw, heard and felt the heartbeat of Bangladesh cricket. What happened inside the stadium, sold out by 25,000 people welcoming the World Cup with open arms, was only a minor part of it. There were 25,000 other fans – and this is a conservative estimate, mind you – outside the stadium, with no hope or intention of getting in, partying away to their own rhythm of vuvuzelas, carrying Bangladesh flags about 50 feet in length, celebrating the World Cup.

The reception for the World Cup on the streets of Dhaka was the closest cricket can get to a football World Cup. There was no giant screen outside for them, the music could hardly be heard there, there was obviously no alcohol to keep them going, but they danced and made merry, choreographing their own moves. There was not an inch of space in about a kilometre’s radius of the Bangabandhu Stadium. Nigam, Adams, Mustafa Kamal (the BCB chief) might as well have not turned up. The crowd either side of the stadium wall couldn’t care less. This was the most outstanding opening ceremony in the world cup history. It didn’t need the Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to declare the World Cup open. The World Cup was open when at 2am last night, thousands were dancing on the streets, signing the best-wishes bat, and tens of cars went round and round the Bangabandhu Stadium.

Ahmed Shehzad and Misbah-ul-Haq hit centuries as Pakistan claimed an 89-run success over Bangladesh in their World Cup warm-up fixture in Dhaka.
Pakistan made 285-9 after opting to bat first, teenage opener Shehzad leading the way with 103 from 120 balls – although he was dropped twice, on 42 and 56 by Suhrawadi Shuvo and Abdur Razzak respectively. Vice captain Misbah, batting at five, dispatched four sixes to reach a hundred of his own at exactly a run-a-ball.
Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan was the standout member of his side’s attack with 3-49, while seam bowler Rubel Hossain also picked up three wickets but conceded 73 runs in his 10 overs. The Tigers’ run chase got off to an awful start when Tamim Iqbal was bowled by Abdul Razzaq with the first ball of the innings.
Imrul Kayes (39) and Junaid Siddique (38) added 71 for the second wicket before a collapse saw them all out for 196 in 41.4 overs. Medium pacer Razzaq finished with 3-31 and there were two wickets apiece for spinnersMohammad Hafeez (2-41) and Abdur Rehman (2-29).

However, there was not much surprise in the 30-man squad as the team is almost same from the recent series. They have given all rounder Alok Kapali yet another chance as he is included in the squad after a long while.
